Start Creating Content
Many of us get so excited to launch a blog that we don't take the time to figure out the details of it. You want to prepare before you launch because this will save you money and the headache of having to go back and make adjustments as you figure out what you want to do.
Without spending a lot of time on this, you need to figure out the following before launching:
A. Choose a theme
Choose a theme that you are going to want to use, know the basics like what you want to write and what colors you want everything to be.
Where to get themes:
B. Create your logo/graphics
Don't waste money on creating a fancy logo or graphics, start with what you can create yourself. Remember, people visit your website for the content, not a fancy logo.
The place to create your own logo is www.canva.com. Once you log in, you'll see how easy it is.
C. Develop a content strategy
Do you know what you are going to write about? Figure out your main topics and points you're going to write on. Once you've created your blog, add the topics you're going to cover as categories.
D. Launch sooner rather than later
Don't wait until you have all of your content written, or your website and logo perfect... Launch first! Get your content out there in front of the world.
#2 Purchase a Domain
You're going to need to spend a few dollars on a proper domain for your blog.
I always purchase my domains from domains.google. In my mind it's the best option and they don't charge you for small things that other websites will charge you for. (I.E. A certified secure website!)
One tip for you when you purchase and are registering your domain, select Private Registration! Unless you want a ton of spam phone calls and emails, make sure you keep everything private. (Trust me, I learned this the hard way and am still paying for it.)
An additional tip for you here, if you want to stand out and look even more professional, get an email address @ your domain. (I recommend G Suite: https://goo.gl/b5tFYq) This is where I have all of my email addresses.
#3 Invest in Quality WordPress Hosting
This is where most people make big mistakes... They immediately locate and sign up for the cheapest hosting they can find. There are a lot of technical reasons why this is going to hurt you in the long run, I'll share the main one.
Your website will be slow and have outages if you get cheap hosting. Google hates both of these things and your website will never rank for anything if you do not invest in proper hosting.
All of my websites rank high on Google and it's partially because of my high quality hosting. There is one option that stands out from among the rest, it's called Titan Host.https://titanhost.io/plans
This is my recommendation to you for hosting!
#4 Install WordPress
Now that you've taken the time to prepare, purchased your domain and invested in quality WordPress hosting, it's time to perform a WordPress installation.
This sounds technical, right? It's not. In fact, if you picked the right hosting like I talked about, it should be as simple as a push of a button.
If you cannot figure this part out, simply ask your host to install WordPress on your domain/hosting and they will do so on your behalf.
#5 Install Theme/Plugins
Installing your theme
Now this is where you begin getting into the technical side of things. If you went with my hosting provider, they'll walk you through a step-by-step of how to install your theme on your new WordPress website.
If not, WordPress will guide you through how to do this on your own. (https://wordpress.org/support/article/using-themes/)
Please don't go crazy with plugins. I see far too many people install a mountain of plugins. They have a fancy calendar, a flasher footer, floating buttons, etc. Plugins can break your website and slow it down drastically. You don't need a plugin for everything, be careful what you're installing.
If you need help with your theme or plugins, please contact me directly. I’ll recommend people who will affordability help you out that are trustworthy. There are a lot of scammers out there that will try to take advantage of you at this point… Be careful!
#6 Start Creating Content
Before you just start publishing content, please go through this additional free course I have available: BLOGGING LIKE A PRO (STEP BY STEP GUIDE)
Now it's time to learn the basics... Once you’ve selected your theme, purchased your domain, invested in quality hosting, and performed your WordPress installation, you’re ready to get started! For all the basics of WordPress, the WordPress documentation is going to help you the most. (https://wordpress.org/support/category/basic-usage/)
I've found the best way to learn on WordPress is just to start messing around with settings and features. Thankfully, you just launched your website, so there isn't much you can do to mess anything up!
